US-Russia gas cartel may revive Nord Stream.
The US and Russia are discussing a gas cartel in which the US would buy Nord Stream and sell Russian gas to Europe under a US brand. This would let the US combine its post-war European gas market share with Russia's former share, act as an intermediary and insurer, control Russia's use of gas as a weapon, and potentially block Iran's future gas cooperation. Germany's opposition has suggested it would return to Russian gas if peace is settled, though Europe's pride, US congressional hawks, sanctions, and Russia's symbolic stake in Nord Stream remain hurdles.
